Notes Concerning:

A Movie by the River

This past Wednesday I went to a movie shown off the Hudson River at Pier 63. I saw Selma. Words cannot express. That movie moved me nearly to tears more than once. No, I hadn't seen it before that day. It deserved all it's nominations and definitely should have received more wins but hey, we live in an oppressive society.

Anyway, so being outdoors. I wore a nice collared chiffon top because I had work first and wasn't going hoe between and wanted to be cute but comfortable. I almost didn't grab the sweater I planned on bringing but after that chill-filled night, I was so glad for it. For future reference: Bring two sweaters. One smaller one as a pre-show pillow and a heavier one to wear because you would not believe the breeze that kicks up after 6pm.

That is unless, if you're going to a movie at McCarren Park in Brooklyn, in which case you should just bring a bed. You'll be sitting on asphalt and no matter how great your blanket is, the movie won't even have started yet and you'll be hurting. The view from the Hudson basically made up for my being any sort of chilly though.

Absolutely gorgeous. I snacked, I read my new book, which at first I almost wasn't looking forward to but so far it's been a spectacular read, I basked in the sun when it shone and I had free popcorn because yes there was free popcorn. You all by now are quite familiar with my love of free stuff.

Free and mine and so much yes

That little mason jar full of juice is an idea coming partially from a girl at the picnic the other week saying she basically swears by it and does it all the time, and coming partially (the other part) from my thinking it would be nice to bring my own juice instead of having to buy some somewhere. Why spend money when I have perfectly good juice at home that isn't getting drunk. It's black current juice which is definitely interesting but so far, no regrets.

I got home at about midnight which made me chuckle considering the fact I had a massive day of inter-office training Thursday. This included my having to order lunch for at least 20 people and my manager sweating me about it the entire time, but I digress as I'm getting ahead of myself. The point was, in an email that came in Wednesday morning, my COO told us all to get some sleep because the training day would be moving fast. But as you all know:
1. I already had plans.
2. I wasn't missing an outdoor movie just because I happened to have training at work the next day.
3. I don't always listen when people tell me what to do (I'm learning I have a passive aggressive problem with authority).
4. I don't sleep most of the time anyway.
So that was the end of even the possibility of Nina "going to bed early and getting some sleep" for said meeting.

A Successful Office Party
AND I ROCKED IT. The training went great. Everyone loved the lunch I ordered. Let me tell you about the lunch I ordered. My manager has some kind of sick fascination with sandwiches so much to the point where every time we have a catered lunch or our headquarters buys us lunch because it's snowing or just because they feel like it, she picks out some place that serves sandwiches. It had gotten to the point where some of my coworkers and myself were just not going to order lunch anymore because who wants a sandwich all the time like that?? I'm vegetarian. What in heavens name am I going to do with a sandwich? Sandwiches are alright I guess but they by no means fill me up. And you know it's a problem when I'm as small as I am, eat as little as I do, and a sandwich still doesn't fill me. So my COO had sent an email out a month or two ago when this training was first announced and instructed me specifically to "order a nice lunch" for everyone with the company credit card. Immediately I was like, "NO SANDWICHES." Since then, my manager had asked me about the soundness of ordering anything besides sandwiches, I kid you not, 4 times. Because in all seriousness, if she had made me order sandwiches that day, I would have excused myself while everyone was eating and gone out to buy myself something else. I refuse to abide by this sandwich tyranny. So I ordered 5 different kinds of pizza and 3 salads to go along with it. My COO and everyone else who stopped by from our headquarters loved it. Everyone in my office loved it too. I felt like a winner for sure.

What was even greater was, on her way out, my COO stops and expressly tells me that I'm doing a great job with the new responsibilities I've been given, the sales rep (the one who got married at the end of May actually) loves all the work and quality of work I'm doing for him and I should definitely keep it up. I beamed from ear to ear when she said those things to me. Looks like Nina just might be glowing up guys. Even if it's in a field I never imagined I'd be in and don't intend on staying in forever. #blessed nonetheless

A Friday Night Fellowship
Last night after work, I went up to Harlem to my second church for the re-initiation of a monthly youth event hosted by a good friend of mine. I honestly didn't even think about whether or not I would know anyone else there until I arrived. The topic was slated as "Unanswered Questions You've Always Had" or something to that effect and we ended up talking about sex before marriage and intimacy and porn and masturbation and yes. It got very real in that room and I loved it. I'm already a sucker for talking about controversial, "touchy" topics within the church so this was right up my alley. I ended up seeing and sitting with people I'd met from the picnic and beach last weekend and it was such a nice evening. I said all this to say I find it ironic that the church I proclaim to attend the least often and more or less like the least out of all the ones I've visited is the one I have the most friends at and the one I seem to be getting the most involved with. How ironic.

Side note: What if I moved to Harlem? In like two years though, not right now.

Well I have no idea what else is happening this weekend or this upcoming week. I'm supposed to be going to an art show with a friend on Thursday I think it is, I may or may not have plans for tomorrow (Sunday) and I believe I'm going to see the original Footloose at Bryant Park on Monday. Outdoors of course. Because 1. It's Bryant Park and 2. I've never seen the original Footloose. I mean yes of course I know the whole story but still, I haven't actually seen it. So that should be nice. I went shopping on Thursday after the training at work because I was high on life and probably shouldn't have but oh well. Topshop was calling my name and I finally bought these shoes that have been calling out to me since I first saw them a month ago and gave them up. Now I want some new jewelry.

ALSO, all my California readers (if there still are any?), I'll be out there sooner than you think ;)

Until next time lovelies,
xx

PS. This is what I looked like today. I liked it.
